Porvoo is 50 kilometres east of Helsinki, under an hour's drive, and Finland's second-oldest town, chartered in the 14th century. The old town survived largely intact: cobbled lanes, painted wooden houses, and the row of red riverside warehouses that shows up on more Finnish postcards than any other single view.
Brunberg, a family chocolate maker since 1871, still runs a factory shop here, and a tasting is built into the day. Lunch on a riverside terrace closes the visit before the drive back to Helsinki.
