The trips

Tallinn sits on Estonia's north coast, which makes Lahemaa National Park, with its manor houses, fishing villages and raised bogs, the natural first day out. The Jägala waterfall is half an hour east, Pärnu, the summer capital, two hours south, and Saaremaa, the largest island, a long day with a ferry each way.

Every trip on this page is private: your own guide, and your own car and driver where the day leaves the city. Pickup is from your hotel or the cruise port, the start time is yours, and you can add a stop on the way.

On your own

Doing it without a tour.

Tartu and Pärnu work by train or bus. Lahemaa, Jägala and Saaremaa are spread out, and that is where a car changes the day.

When to go

Every month works, differently.

May to September is the long season: the bogs in Lahemaa are walkable at any hour of the long light, Pärnu's beach is busy in July, and the ferries to Saaremaa run often. Midsummer, around 23 June, is the best night of the year in the countryside.

In winter the days are short, a little over six hours of light in December. Lahemaa under snow is quiet and beautiful, the Jägala waterfall can freeze into a wall of ice in a cold January, and Saaremaa is best left for the summer.

Questions
What is the best day trip from Tallinn?
Lahemaa National Park, for most first visits: a manor house, a fishing village on the coast and a boardwalk across a raised bog, about an hour from Tallinn. The Jägala waterfall fits on the way.
Can I do a day trip from Tallinn without a car?
Yes, to Tartu and Pärnu, about two hours each by train or bus, and to the Estonian Open Air Museum by city bus. Lahemaa is hard by bus because the sights are spread out.
Is Saaremaa a day trip from Tallinn?
It can be, but it is a long one: about twelve hours, including the drive to Virtsu and the ferry to Muhu each way. Two days on the island is better if you have them.
Can I do a day trip from Tallinn on a cruise stop?
Yes. Lahemaa and the Jägala waterfall both fit an eight-hour call, with the return time agreed before you leave the ship. Our Tallinn shore excursions page has the details.
Are the day trips private?
Yes. Every trip is only your party, with your own guide, and your own car and driver where the day leaves the city. There are no shared coaches.
