Arriving in Vilnius

Vilnius has one of the largest old towns in Europe that still looks much as it did three hundred years ago, and the best thing to do with it on a travel day is nothing in particular. Your driver takes the bags at arrivals and has you at the hotel within half an hour. Rooms are normally ready from early afternoon, and the hotel will take the bags if you arrive before that. What is left of the day is unplanned on purpose: the old town starts at the front door, and an hour of wandering before dinner will do more for you than any tour would. The hotel is worth a word. It stands on a street named after the Vilna Gaon, the eighteenth century scholar who made this city one of the great centres of Jewish learning, in what was then the Jewish quarter. We book dinner nearby and your guide joins you over it to talk through the sixteen days, so you know the shape of the trip. If the flight runs late we move the table rather than rush you.

Jewish Vilnius

This is the day the trip is built around, so you have a specialist rather than a general city guide. You start at the Jewish museum, which covers what this community was before the war. Vilnius was known as the Jerusalem of the North, and the name was meant seriously. Then you walk into the old town. You stand in the courtyard where the Great Synagogue stood, along with its prayer houses and a famous library, until it was destroyed. Archaeologists have been digging the site for years and there is usually something uncovered to see. Your guide shows you both gates of the ghetto the Germans set up in 1941, the streets between them, and the plaques most visitors walk straight past. A second small museum covers what happened across the country as a whole, which is the background you want before the Šiauliai district later in the week. In the afternoon you drive twenty minutes out to Paneriai, a wood on the edge of the city where more than a hundred thousand people were shot, most of them the Jews of Vilnius. It is quiet, it is well kept, and you stay as long as you want to. The evening is left free on purpose.

Trakai: a castle, and the Karaim

You start at the covered market, a great iron and brick hall from 1906, at the hour it is actually working: smoked meats, wheels of fresh farm cheese, honey, dark rye, and the mushroom and berry stalls that are at their best in October. Three quarters of an hour, because it is on the road out of town and because you should see it. Then it is thirty five minutes west to Trakai, a small town spread over a group of lakes. The castle is not the only reason to come. At the end of the fourteenth century the ruler of Lithuania brought several hundred Karaim families here from Crimea. They are a Turkic speaking people who follow a form of Judaism based on the Hebrew Bible without the later rabbinic commentaries, and they have lived in this town ever since. About forty are left. Their street still has their wooden houses on it, each with three windows facing the road, said to be one for God, one for the ruler and one for the family. You visit their prayer house, which they call a kenesa, the only one still in use in the country and one of only two left in Europe, and a small museum of their manuscripts. Lunch you make yourself, folding pastry with a Karaim cook for the lamb and onion pies the community is best known for. Only then do you cross the footbridges to the island castle, once the coach parties have thinned.

North to the manor, and a town that is gone

The road north runs out of the city and into flat, wide farming country, and the town of Šeduva sits directly on it, which is why the museum is today rather than a separate trip. It opened in 2025 and it is the largest in this part of Europe devoted to the small Jewish market towns that once covered the region. In Yiddish these were called shtetls, and before the war there were hundreds of them here. The building itself is worth seeing: a Finnish architect gave it a roofline drawn from the outline of a small town, and it was named one of the most beautiful museums in the world in 2026. What makes it the right stop before anything else is that it is not mainly about the killing. It reconstructs how one town actually lived, the trades and the arguments and the marriages and the leaving, told through the voices of that town's own descendants. You go round with a guide and come out understanding something you cannot get from reading, and tomorrow you will use it. From there it is half an hour to the manor, the most complete country estate left in Lithuania, where you have three nights. Dinner is in the estate restaurant, which cooks from old Lithuanian recipes.

Your grandmother's town

Šiauliai is the district town, and it sits on the road between the manor and Gruzdžiai, which is why you start there. Jews called it Shavl, and it was the town your family's world turned around: its market, its trades, its rabbi. Your guide walks you through the streets where the Jews of the whole district were held from 1941. Then you drive fifteen minutes to a forest at Kužiai, where about eight thousand people from the town and the villages around it were shot and buried. There is a marked grave and a stone in two languages, and you will probably be the only ones there. From there it is twenty five minutes northwest to Gruzdžiai, and the whole afternoon is yours in it. Your family would have called it Gruzd. Jews settled here at the end of the eighteenth century, and by 1897 they were 482 of the town's 1,160 people, about 120 families, close to half of it. Then the local economy failed them and they left, mostly for South Africa, the United States and Mexico, so that by 1923 only 142 remained. Your grandmother's way out was very likely one of those roads. With the research your genealogist prepared before you flew, your guide takes you to the Jewish cemetery, the market square, the streets where the houses stood, and any addresses the archives gave us, and there is time to sit with it rather than tick it off. We do not promise a preserved town, because there is not one. We can promise you will not be guessing which ground you are standing on. On the way back, in the last of the light, you stop at the Hill of Crosses: a low rise covered in hundreds of thousands of crosses left by Lithuanians through two Soviet occupations, bulldozed flat three times and rebuilt every time.

A day at the manor, with the car on call

This day is deliberately empty, and it sits here because yesterday was the heaviest day of the trip and tomorrow you travel. Most of the estate can be walked without leaving the grounds: the granary, the mill and its dam, the stone bridge, the old brewery buildings, and a park that runs down to the river. Breakfast has no clock on it and the estate restaurant is there at lunchtime. What we add today is the car. Your driver is on call from morning until late and the run into Šiauliai takes about forty minutes each way, so you can go in for a few hours and come back, or go in twice, and none of it has to be decided in advance. If you want a reason to go, there are three good ones. The best is the Frenkel villa, the house of the Jewish leather manufacturer whose factories were most of the town's industry before the war, now a museum, which is the other half of the story you spent yesterday on. There is also a good regional museum, and an old centre with a sundial square and a restored cathedral that take an easy hour. If instead you would rather read in the park all day and see nobody, that is a better use of it and we will not talk you out of it.

First class to Riga

After the roads of the last few days you cross the border sitting down. Breakfast is unhurried, then you are driven the short distance to the station. The car and the luggage go north by road, so you travel with nothing but a day bag. You join the daily Vilnius to Riga service in first class with your seats reserved, and it runs north over the Latvian border and into Riga at 11:34. It is a little under two hours, and flat farmland and forest go past the window the whole way, which is a better introduction to the country than a motorway would be. You are met on the platform when you arrive. Lunch first, then the afternoon is the thing Riga is famous for. Around 1900 the city built street after street of highly decorated apartment houses, in the style usually called Art Nouveau, and it has one of the densest concentrations of them anywhere in the world. The point of walking those streets with someone is that you learn to read the fronts of the buildings rather than only photograph them: who built them, in what year, and which of the carved faces are portraits of real people. Your hotel stands on the edge of the old town, looking across the park that separates it from these streets, so you walk back down into it as the light goes.

Jewish Riga, and the market halls

You start on an island in the river at a memorial most visitors to Riga never hear about. Žanis Lipke was a dock worker who hid more than fifty Jews, many of them in a pit dug under the woodshed behind his own house, and the memorial is a small dark timber building shaped around the idea of that hiding place. It is tiny and it takes a while to leave. From there you cross into the old ghetto district for a museum laid out along a rebuilt ghetto street, and then to the site of the Great Choral Synagogue, burnt in July 1941 with people inside, where the broken walls have been left standing as the memorial. Lunch is next door on purpose, in the central market: five vast halls that were built as airship hangars and are still the largest market in Europe. Smoked eel and lamprey in the fish hall, curd and sour cream in the dairy hall, rye counters, pickles of every kind, and mountains of autumn mushrooms. You go round with someone who shops there and lunch gets assembled rather than ordered. In the afternoon you drive out to Rumbula, a pine forest southeast of the city where about twenty five thousand people were shot over two days in the winter of 1941. The memorial is a clearing of stones cut with names. The evening is entirely yours.

A small town, a wide waterfall, and a bathhouse

The road west leaves Riga and crosses into Courland, a region that was its own small duchy for two hundred years, and the landscape loosens: forest, small farms, wooden houses, very little traffic. Kuldīga was added to the UNESCO list in 2023 for a simple reason, which is that nobody ever redeveloped it. The timber town of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries is still standing and still lived in, cobbles and red tiled roofs and low houses on their original plots. The river runs straight through the middle and drops over a waterfall that is only a couple of metres high but about 250 metres across, which makes it the widest in Europe, and in autumn you can sometimes still see fish trying to jump it. Your guide walks you over the long brick bridge of 1874 and through the lanes. Late in the afternoon a bath master takes over for the Latvian bathhouse ritual, which is not a sauna as you know it. It is a wood fired room, bunches of oak, birch and juniper worked over you in a set order, herbal infusions, cold plunges between rounds, and someone whose actual profession this is deciding what happens next. You will sleep extremely well. The night is in a restored merchant's courtyard in the middle of the old town.

The cape where two seas meet

This is the drive that earns its place. The coast road north runs through a string of former fishing villages that belonged to the Livonians, a people distinct from the Latvians with their own language, of which a handful of speakers survived into this century. At the top is Cape Kolka, the point where the Gulf of Riga meets the open Baltic, with a sandbar running out from it and the two seas visibly disagreeing over it. In autumn the cape is one of the great bottlenecks for migrating birds in Europe: everything coming down from the Arctic follows the coast and gets funnelled through here, and on a good October morning the count runs into six figures. We time the stop for the morning when the movement is heaviest, and bring binoculars. From the cape the road turns east and north across the Estonian border to Pärnu, which has been the country's seaside town since the nineteenth century and is properly quiet by October. You check into the old mud bath house on the seafront for two nights, and tomorrow has nothing in it at all.

A day with nothing in it

This is the first of the days the trip sets aside for putting something down, and it sits here on purpose, after Lithuania rather than before it. The spa occupies the original halls of a grand bathing house built in 1927: thermal pools, a run of saunas, and the mud treatments the town was built on, which are worth doing once because they are the local thing rather than an imported ritual. We book whatever treatments you want on the day rather than committing you in advance. Beyond that the day is genuinely open. Pärnu in October has a long empty beach, a park of enormous old trees, and a quarter of wooden villas you can walk in an hour. If the weather turns, the honest answer is that the spa is where you should be all day and nobody will think less of you. Dinner is booked downstairs.

Across to the islands

The islands feel like a different country and the ferry is part of that: half an hour across, gulls the whole way, the mainland letting go behind you. The first island is small and low and known for two things. One is Koguva, a farming and fishing village of stone walls and thatched roofs that survived more or less intact and is now a museum village that people still live in, and where the island's very bold traditional embroidery is still made. The other is the food. There is a long habit here of smoking, salting and fermenting to get through a long winter, and a winery and several smokehouses to show for it, which is the sort of thing you will want to ask questions about. We build the stops around what is open in October and what the guide knows is good that week rather than a fixed list. A causeway then carries you onto the main island and into Kuressaare, whose castle is the best preserved medieval fortress in the region and still has water in the moat. You are staying on the promenade beyond it, with the castle park between you and the town and the sea at the end of the garden, for two nights.

A crater, a cliff and a row of windmills

The island is big enough that a day's loop still leaves things out, and it has a genuinely odd set of things in it. Kaali is a crater about a hundred metres across, made by a meteorite that landed here some 7,500 years ago, now a round dark lake in a ring of trees. It was a place of sacrifice for a very long time afterwards and it still feels like one. On the north coast a limestone cliff drops straight into the sea, the highest on the islands, and in October the wind there is a physical fact. Elsewhere stands the last row of the wooden windmills that once stood above every village here. Between those three the day is really about what the island makes: juniper, which grows everywhere and ends up in everything from the smoked fish to the beer, the black bread, the farm cheeses, and small smokehouses that will happily talk to you. Your guide builds the route around what is actually open and worth stopping for that week rather than driving the standard circuit. You are back in time for the castle before dark, or the saunas, or both: they are a hundred metres apart.

Back to the mainland, and into Tallinn

You leave the island after breakfast, back over the causeway and across on the ferry, and the road north runs up the coast. If you want one more stop, Haapsalu is the obvious one: a small seaside town with a ruined bishop's castle, a wooden railway station with one of the longest covered platforms in Europe, built for a tsar who came by train, and the lace shawls it is known for. Otherwise we drive it straight and give you the afternoon in Tallinn instead. Either way you are inside the walls by mid afternoon. The hotel is at the top of Pikk Street, hard against the old wall, and it is worth arriving with enough light to look at it properly. Tallinn has the best preserved medieval old town in northern Europe and its walls and towers are essentially complete, and the first evening in it should be spent walking rather than being told things. Dinner is yours: your guide will give you three names and no reservation, which at this point in the trip is what you will want.

Tallinn, and the table

The morning is the old town done properly: the town hall square, the guild halls, the climb up to the upper town for the roofs and the two viewing terraces, and the stretch of wall you can actually walk along. Your guide takes in the small Jewish story here too, which has a different shape from Vilnius or Riga. Estonia's community was tiny, the pre war synagogue was destroyed, and the present one only opened in 2007, the first purpose built synagogue in the country since the war. In the afternoon you go outside the walls to the old railway workshops, now full of design studios and kitchens, and to the market beside the station, which is where the city actually shops: meat and fish halls downstairs, food stalls upstairs, a flea market at the back. It is the right last market of the trip and a good place to buy the things you decided you wanted three countries ago. The evening is the birthday table. We book it for whichever night is the real date and move this day around it, and we tell the restaurant what it is, but not loudly enough that anyone sings at you unless you want that.
