Poland: the royal seat

Arrival at KRK and a transfer to the Hotel Copernicus below Wawel Hill. The Main Square at golden hour, a private Wawel Castle, and a welcome dinner in a medieval cellar.

On arrival at Kraków airport your guide and chauffeur meet you and transfer you to the Hotel Copernicus, the oldest house on Kanonicza street, tucked just below Wawel Hill. After check-in you set out on foot with your guide to the Main Square at golden hour, when the Cloth Hall and St Mary's basilica catch the low light and the trumpeter sounds his hourly call. From there you climb to a private Wawel Castle, the royal seat of Poland, where the state rooms and cathedral are opened for your small group alone. The day closes with a welcome dinner in a vaulted medieval cellar, a fitting first night for a journey that runs the length of five countries. The rest of the evening is yours to wander the old town or rest before the days ahead.

Leonardo & Kazimierz

Leonardo's Lady with an Ermine at the Czartoryski, then the synagogues and courtyards of the Kazimierz quarter.

After breakfast your guide walks you to the Czartoryski Museum to stand before Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine, one of only a handful of his paintings in the world and the high point of Poland's national collection. From there you cross into Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter, threading between its surviving synagogues and the quiet courtyards that hold the memory of the community that lived here. Your guide unpacks the layered story of the district as you go, from its medieval founding to the wartime years and its later revival. You pause at Plac Nowy, the old market square, where the round former poultry hall now serves the local street food the quarter is known for. The afternoon stays unhurried, leaving room to linger over a coffee or browse the design shops before returning to the Copernicus.

Dinner in the salt cathedral

A private descent into the Wieliczka salt mine to the Chapel of St Kinga, carved from rock salt, for a candlelit dinner under salt chandeliers. Night in Kraków.

In the late afternoon your driver takes you the short distance from Kraków to Wieliczka, where centuries of miners turned a working salt mine into an underground world. Your guide leads a private descent through timber-braced passages and past statues carved entirely from rock salt, down toward the Chapel of St Kinga, a full church hewn from the seam more than a hundred metres below ground. There, beneath chandeliers cut from translucent salt crystal, a candlelit dinner is laid for your group alone, the air still and faintly mineral. It is one of the signature evenings of the journey and a Polish farewell before the road turns north. Afterward you ascend and are transferred back to the Copernicus for a third and final night in Kraków.

The rebuilt capital

Travel north to Warsaw. The old town raised from rubble after the war, the Royal Castle, and a private Chopin recital in the evening.

This morning you leave Kraków with your guide and driver and travel north across the Polish plain to Warsaw, a road of roughly three hundred kilometres that gives an easy first sense of the country's scale. On arrival you walk the old town, a place almost entirely flattened in the war and then rebuilt brick by brick from old paintings and plans, an act of stubborn faith now recognised by UNESCO. Your guide brings you to the Royal Castle, restored to its former state and once again the ceremonial heart of the capital. You check in to the Hotel Bristol, the city's belle-époque grande dame on the Royal Route, with time to settle before the evening. The day ends with a private Chopin recital, the composer's own music played for your group in a quiet salon.

North to the Grand Duchy

Transfer north across the border to Vilnius. An evening orientation through the largest baroque old town in northern Europe.

After breakfast at the Bristol you set out with your guide and driver on the long transfer north, crossing from Poland into Lithuania and on to Vilnius, the old capital of the Grand Duchy. The route runs through gentle farmland and forest, with stops along the way to break the drive and stretch your legs. You reach Vilnius in time to check in to the Grand Hotel Kempinski on Cathedral Square before an unhurried evening orientation on foot. Your guide threads you through the largest baroque old town in northern Europe, a UNESCO quarter of churches, university courtyards and narrow lanes, ending at Cathedral Square as the light fades and the bell tower is lit. It is a gentle first taste of the city before the fuller days that follow.

Balloon & amber

A sunrise balloon over the Old Town, the Užupis artists' republic, and a private amber atelier in the afternoon.

You begin before dawn, when your guide brings you to the launch field for a sunrise balloon over Vilnius, one of the few European capitals where flights drift directly above the historic centre. From the basket you watch the spires, red roofs and river bends of the Old Town slip past in the early light. Back on the ground you cross the little bridge into Užupis, the self-declared artists' republic with its own tongue-in-cheek constitution nailed to a wall, where studios and cafés fill what was once a forgotten quarter. In the afternoon you visit a private amber atelier, where a master shows how the Baltic's fossil resin is sorted, cut and set, the stone that has been traded from these shores for thousands of years. The evening stays free for dinner at your own pace before a second night on Cathedral Square.

The island castle

The Trakai island castle by boat and a Karaim lunch, and the Kernavė hill-forts at golden hour. Return to Vilnius.

This morning you leave Vilnius with your guide and driver for the lakes of Trakai, the old grand-ducal seat just west of the city. You reach the red-brick island castle by boat across the still water, then explore the restored keep and its halls before sitting down to a Karaim lunch, the cooking of a small Turkic community the dukes settled here six centuries ago, famous for its kibinai pastries. In the afternoon the road turns to Kernavė, where a line of grass-covered hill-forts rises above the Neris valley, the earliest medieval capital of Lithuania and now a UNESCO site. You walk the mounds with your guide as the late sun rakes across them, a quiet, layered place after the castle. Afterward you are driven back to Vilnius for your final night in the city.

Latvia: a palace after hours

The Hill of Crosses, then across the border to a private after-hours visit and dinner at Rundāle Palace. A night in the neighbouring Mežotne Palace.

Leaving Vilnius behind, you drive north with your guide toward the Latvian border, pausing near Šiauliai at the Hill of Crosses, a low rise covered with hundreds of thousands of crucifixes left by pilgrims over generations, a place of quiet weight even on a grey day. You then cross into Latvia and continue to Rundāle Palace, the baroque summer residence designed by the architect of St Petersburg's Winter Palace. Here the doors are opened for you after hours, so the gilded ballrooms and formal gardens are yours without the crowds, followed by a private dinner in the palace. The estate's restored interiors and parterre are among the finest in the region. You spend the night close by at Mežotne Palace, a neoclassical manor on the Lielupe river, its period rooms and park a calm end to a long, memorable day.

Art Nouveau & the market

Drive into Riga for the Art Nouveau facades of Alberta iela and the gourmet crawl through the Central Market's zeppelin hangars.

After a morning at Mežotne you are driven the short distance into Riga, the largest of the Baltic capitals and a city built on Hanseatic trade. With your guide you walk Alberta iela, the street that holds the densest concentration of Art Nouveau facades in Europe, their stone faces, masks and flourishes the work of architect Mikhail Eisenstein. From there you move into the Central Market, where five vast pavilions raised from old zeppelin hangars sell everything from smoked fish and rye bread to Latvian honey, a gourmet crawl led by your guide. The afternoon leaves room to explore the cobbled old town and its guild houses at your own pace. You settle in to the Grand Hotel Kempinski opposite the Freedom Monument, with the evening free to dine wherever the city tempts you.

The Gauja castles

The Gauja valley: the Sigulda cable car, Turaida's red keep, and a candlelit walk through Cēsis castle, ending with a pirts sauna in the forest.

Today your guide and driver take you northeast from Riga into the Gauja valley, a wooded river gorge often called Latvia's Switzerland. At Sigulda you ride the old cable car that swings high across the gorge for a long view over the autumn or winter forest below. You cross to Turaida, where a red-brick medieval keep rises from a hilltop above sculpture gardens, and then continue to Cēsis for a candlelit walk through the ruined castle, where you carry a lantern through its dark stone passages as a guide once would have. The day winds down in the forest with a pirts, the Latvian sauna ritual of birch-whisk and herb-steam led by a master, followed by dinner. You stay the night at Kārļamuiža, a restored country manor on the edge of the national park.

Cross into Estonia and drive to Tallinn. A private walk through the best-preserved medieval old town in northern Europe, and a Michelin dinner inside the walls.

This morning you leave the Gauja behind and drive north with your guide, crossing from Latvia into Estonia and on to Tallinn, the last of the Baltic capitals on the journey. On arrival you set out on a private walk through the old town, the best-preserved medieval core in northern Europe, where intact stone walls and watchtowers ring a maze of merchant houses, guild halls and the upper town of Toompea. Your guide draws out the Hanseatic story of the place as you climb to the viewing terraces above the red rooftops. You check in to the Hotel Telegraaf, a restored telegraph building on Vene street inside the walls. Bog walk & smoke sauna

A dawn bog walk in Lahemaa National Park, a manor lunch, and an initiation into the UNESCO smoke-sauna ritual.

You leave Tallinn early with your guide for Lahemaa National Park, the great expanse of coast, forest and peat bog east of the capital. At dawn you set out on boardwalks across an open bog, the low light catching pools and stunted pines in a landscape that feels far older than any city you have seen. After the walk you sit down to a manor lunch on one of the park's restored estates. In the afternoon you are initiated into the Estonian smoke sauna, a UNESCO-listed ritual in which a chimneyless room is slowly filled with woodsmoke, then cleared, for a soft, dark, fragrant heat unlike any other. You spend the night at Vihula Manor, a restored estate inside the park, with its watermill spa and quiet grounds to wander before dinner.

Today you cross Estonia from the northern park to its western coast, where the mainland gives way to a scatter of low islands. Your driver brings you to the ferry, and you sail across the sound to Muhu, a quiet island of juniper heath, stone walls and thatched farms. From the harbour it is a short drive to Pädaste Manor, a restored medieval house set on its own peninsula and widely held to be the finest country retreat in the Baltics. The afternoon is yours to walk the reed-fringed shoreline, use the sea spa or simply slow down after the long arc of capitals. Finland: the sea crossing

Return to Tallinn and cross the Gulf of Finland by sea to Helsinki. A private session at the Löyly seafront sauna with a Baltic plunge, then the Design District.

This morning you ferry back from Muhu to the mainland and drive to Tallinn, where the journey leaves the Baltic states and crosses the Gulf of Finland by sea to Helsinki, a passage of roughly two hours with the old town shrinking astern and the Finnish capital rising ahead. On arrival your guide brings you to Löyly, the architect-designed seafront sauna where a private session is followed by a plunge straight into the cold Baltic, the Finnish way to mark an arrival. Warmed and revived, you walk into the Design District, the cluster of streets where Finland's design tradition lives in its shops and studios. Today is given to the thing Helsinki does best. With your guide you visit the ateliers and small studios where the city's designers and makers work, the living end of a tradition that runs from glass and ceramics to furniture and textiles. The high point is the Aalto House, the home that Alvar Aalto built for himself and his studio, where the architect's ideas about light, wood and everyday objects are laid out exactly as he lived among them. The rest of the day leaves you free among the galleries and shops of the Design District at whatever pace suits you, with your guide on hand for recommendations. This morning your guide leads you down to the harbour for a private boat into the Helsinki archipelago, the maze of islands and skerries that fans out from the city across the gulf. You sail first to Suomenlinna, the great sea fortress built across six linked islands to guard the approaches, where you walk its ramparts, tunnels and dry dock with your guide. From there the boat carries you on to quieter outer islands, away from any crowd, with a long lunch served on the water as the skerries drift by. The Arctic finale begins

Fly north to Lapland and a glass-roofed aurora cabin in the fells. The first northern-lights watch from the warmth of the bed.

After breakfast your driver transfers you to the airport for the flight north to Lapland, lifting you in a couple of hours from the coast to the Arctic, where the forest gives way to open fell and snow. On landing you are met and driven to Kakslauttanen below the Saariselkä fells, the original glass-igloo resort, where reindeer often stand at the edge of the trees. You settle into a glass-roofed cabin and are fitted with the Arctic clothing you will need for the days ahead. The evening is gentle by design, a first northern-lights watch made from the warmth of your own bed, with the wake-up service ready to rouse you if the aurora stirs in the dark sky above the glass. Later you join a Sámi reindeer evening, meeting the herders whose lives still turn with the animals across this far north and hearing the stories that go with them. For those who want a bigger day, there is the option to travel to the Sampo icebreaker on the Gulf of Bothnia, where the ship crushes a channel through the pack ice and you can float in a survival suit in the open Arctic sea.
