The story in one paragraph

Turku & the Archipelago Trail, at the pace of a long read.

The Turku Archipelago has roughly 20,000 islands. The Archipelago Trail threads through the largest of them on a 250 km loop of roads and free car ferries, and it is one of the most quietly beautiful cycling routes in northern Europe.

One night in Turku, two on the islands (a converted pilot's cottage on Nagu, a fisherman's inn on Korpo), one back in Turku for the return. We provide touring bikes, panniers, and ferry timetables. The terrain is flat, the distances short, and the ferries run like clockwork.

Why this trip.

Four things that set it apart
01

Turku Castle, from the inside

Finland's largest medieval fortress sits where the Aura river meets the sea. We visit in the morning before the coach groups arrive, with a guide who focuses on the Swedish-era rooms most visitors walk through too quickly.

02

The Archipelago Trail by bicycle

A 250 km loop through the world's largest archipelago on flat roads and free car ferries. We provide touring bikes, panniers, and a laminated ferry timetable. The terrain is gentle; the views are not.

03

Nagu: the bakery island

The Nagu bakery has been open since 1909. We stop for cinnamon buns and sourdough bread, then pack a picnic lunch for the ride south. The wooden church dates from the 1440s.

04

Korpo: smoked fish at the harbour

The outermost island on our route. A fisherman's inn serves smoked vendace caught that morning, and the harbour is quiet enough to hear the oystercatchers from your dinner table.

Day by day.

4-day itinerary · approx. 0 km

Each day is built around one or two anchor experiences with deliberate slack for free time. Departure timings adjust slightly with daylight and weather.

01arrival
Helsinki → Turku, Finland

The old capital

Train from Helsinki to Turku (2 hours). Afternoon guided visit to Turku Castle, Finland's largest medieval fortress, and a walk along the Aura river through the old town. Evening at a riverside restaurant.

The train from Helsinki passes through the flat farmland of Uusimaa and arrives at Turku's central station by early afternoon. A short walk to your hotel on the Aura riverbank, then straight to Turku Castle. The guide focuses on the Swedish period: the banqueting halls, the Renaissance rooms, and the dungeon where King Erik XIV was held. Afterwards, walk the length of the Aura back towards the cathedral, past the wooden boat workshops and the summer restaurant barges moored along the riverbank. Dinner at one of the Aura-side terraces.

First ferry, first island

Collect your bicycle and ride south to Parainen (30 km, flat). Free car ferry to Nagu. Afternoon on the island: the wooden church, the guest harbour, and a long swim off the granite rocks.

Morning bike fitting at the hotel. The route south follows quiet roads through birch forest and past occasional red wooden farmhouses. At Parainen, the free car ferry takes ten minutes across to the first island. From the ferry dock, a 15 km ride to Nagu village. Stop at the 1440s wooden church, then continue to the guest harbour. The Nagu bakery prepares your picnic for tomorrow. Afternoon swimming off the smooth granite rocks at the southern tip of the island. The water is cold and clean; the light lasts until 11 pm in midsummer.

Nagu → Korpo, Archipelago

Deeper into the archipelago

Cycle 25 km through the pine forest to the southern tip of Nagu, ferry to Korpo. Lunch from the Nagu bakery, packed in your panniers. Smoked-fish dinner at a harbourside inn.

The day's ride is shorter but the landscape is wilder. The road narrows through old pine forest and opens onto views of the outer archipelago. At the southern ferry dock, a short crossing to Korpo. The island is quieter than Nagu, more Swedish-speaking, and closer to the open Baltic. Lunch is the bakery picnic: sourdough bread, smoked salmon, pickled herring, and a flask of coffee. Arrive at the Korpo harbour by mid-afternoon. The fisherman's inn serves what was caught that morning: vendace, perch, or pike-perch, smoked over alder wood. The harbour is quiet enough to hear the oystercatchers.

Ferry chain and departure

Morning on Korpo harbour. Ferry chain back north via Nagu and Parainen (the ferries run every 30 minutes in summer). Return bicycle in Turku, train to Helsinki for evening departure.

A last morning at the harbour. The ferry chain runs northward: Korpo to Nagu (20 minutes), Nagu to Parainen (10 minutes), then a short ride back to Turku. The ferries are free and run every half hour in summer, so there is no rush. Return the bicycle at Turku station, buy a coffee, and take the afternoon train to Helsinki (2 hours). Arrive at Helsinki central station in time for an evening flight or an overnight stay.
