The story in one paragraph

Vilnius to Warsaw Overland, at the pace of a long read.

Vilnius and Warsaw are 580 km apart by road, connected by a corridor most travellers fly over. We drive it slowly.

Begin in baroque Vilnius, the largest such ensemble in Northern Europe, with the self-declared republic of Uzupis across the river. Cross south into Poland for the forgotten Augustow Canal and the Lipka Tatar village of Kruszyniany, ending in Warsaw's reconstructed Old Town.

Why this trip.

Four things that set it apart
01

Two capitals, one border crossing

Vilnius and Warsaw are 580 km apart by road, connected by a corridor that most travellers fly over. We drive it slowly, stopping where the Grand Duchy of Lithuania becomes the Kingdom of Poland.

02

The Augustow Canal, a forgotten waterway

Built in the 1820s to bypass Prussian tariffs, the canal crosses the Polish-Belarusian border through virgin forest. We take a short boat ride on the Polish section, past hand-operated locks unchanged since the 1830s.

03

Kruszyniany, the Tatar village

One of two surviving Lipka Tatar settlements in Poland. A wooden mosque from 1750, a Tatar cemetery in the forest, and a lunch of pierekaczewnik (spiral meat pie) with a family who has lived here for twelve generations.

04

Warsaw's reconstruction, from rubble to UNESCO

The Old Town was rebuilt brick by brick from 18th-century paintings after 1945. We walk it with a historian who unpacks what reconstruction means when the original no longer exists.

Day by day.

5-day itinerary · approx. 617 km

Each day is built around one or two anchor experiences with deliberate slack for free time. Departure timings adjust slightly with daylight and weather.

Vilnius, Lithuania

Arrival and the baroque city

Arrive at Vilnius airport. A 20-minute transfer to your hotel inside the UNESCO Old Town. Afternoon orientation walk through Cathedral Square, the Bernardine Garden, and up Gediminas Hill for the panorama. Welcome dinner at a cellar restaurant on Stikliu gatve.

Vilnius is the quietest of the three Baltic capitals, and the one that rewards slow walking most. The Old Town is the largest baroque ensemble in Northern Europe, dense and layered, with courtyards behind courtyards and churches that open onto unexpected gardens. Your hotel sits inside the walls, a short walk from the Cathedral. Tonight we climb Gediminas Hill for the view that orients everything: the Old Town below, the river Neris to the north, the television tower on the western ridge. Dinner is in the Jewish Quarter, where the narrow streets still follow their medieval footprint even though the buildings above them are 18th century.
