One day in Vilnius.

Vilnius is compact enough that one well-planned day covers the essential character of the city. Here is how to spend it.

The short answer

One day in Vilnius is enough to walk the UNESCO baroque old town, cross into the Užupis artists' quarter, and add a trip to Trakai island castle 30 minutes away. Arrive by 9 am, start at Cathedral Square, and you can do all of this without rushing. Vilnius is easier to read in a single day than either Riga or Tallinn.

Morning: Cathedral Square and the old town

Begin at Cathedral Square, the civic centre of Vilnius. The Cathedral itself is a neoclassical reconstruction; the detached bell tower beside it is the oldest surviving structure on the square. From here, Pilies Street runs south into the old town's densest quarter.

Walk south through Pilies to the University courtyard: an unexpected sequence of five architectural courtyards spanning several centuries. St Anne's Church, a short detour west, is the most concentrated piece of Gothic brickwork in the Baltics.

Climb Gediminas Tower above the old town for the best view of the baroque roofscape. The walk up takes about 15 minutes from the old town gates.

Midday: Užupis and lunch

Užupis, the self-declared artists' republic across the Vilnia river from the old town, takes about an hour to explore properly. The constitution of Užupis is engraved and posted in over 50 languages on the corner of Paupio Street. The quarter has a concentration of small galleries, studios, and a few good lunch spots.

For lunch, the old town streets around Pilies and Stikliai have a range of restaurants serving Lithuanian food at better quality than the most obvious tourist-facing places near Cathedral Square.

Afternoon: Trakai castle or the Palace

With a private driver, Trakai island castle is 30 minutes from Vilnius. You cross to the Gothic brick castle by a wooden footbridge, visit the interior, and have a Karaim lunch of kibinai pastries on the lake shore. Allow three hours for the round trip including travel.

If you prefer to stay in the city, the Palace of the Grand Dukes on Cathedral Square covers the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in a modern museum that does justice to the subject. The Museum of Occupations is a short walk away and covers the 20th century.

Evening: the lower old town

The area around Didžioji and Literatų streets comes alive in the evening. Several good restaurants serve Lithuanian food: cepelinai potato dumplings, cold beet soup in summer, and the cured meats of the Lithuanian countryside tradition.

If you want a single drink before dinner, the bar scene around Pilies and Vokiečių streets is compact and manageable without a guide.

Practical notes

Vilnius Airport is 7 km south of the old town, about 15 minutes by taxi or private transfer. All main sites are walkable within the old town.

Vilnius is 310 km from Klaipėda, the main cruise port on the Lithuanian coast: about three hours each way by private car. A private day tour from Klaipėda can reach Vilnius and Trakai in one long day, but it is a significant amount of road time. For a more relaxed city visit, fly into Vilnius directly.

Common questions
Is one day enough for Vilnius?
Yes, for a first visit. The old town is compact, Trakai is a natural half-day extension nearby, and the character of the city comes through clearly in a single well-organised day.
What is Vilnius most known for?
Its baroque old town, one of the largest in northern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Užupis artists' quarter, the Trakai island castle 30 km outside the city, and the deep history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania are the other main draws.
Can you walk around Vilnius in a day?
The old town core is walkable in a morning. Add Užupis in the afternoon and you have a comfortable day's walking without a car. Trakai requires a car or bus, about 30 minutes each way.
How far is Vilnius from the cruise port at Klaipėda?
About 310 km, roughly three hours by private car. It is a long but doable day trip from Klaipėda. A private guide can combine Vilnius old town and Trakai castle in one full day.
