One departure a year, for the shortest night of all. Six days from the long light of Vilnius to a Latvian manor village on Jāņi eve, where the bonfire is lit at dusk and kept burning until the sun comes back.
The route.
The long evening
Your chauffeur meets you at Vilnius airport and drives you into the Old Town. On the eve of the solstice the northern light lingers past ten, and a welcome dinner unfolds in the last of it.

On arrival at Vilnius airport (VNO), your chauffeur meets you and drives you into the baroque Old Town to your hotel on Cathedral Square. These are the longest days of the year, and the light holds: the sun does not set until past ten, and the dusk that follows barely darkens. Your private guide walks you through the quiet, gold-lit lanes as the city slows into the evening, setting up the week to come and the build toward the shortest night of all. A welcome dinner unfolds in the long light, and the rest of the evening, still bright, is your own.

Solstice at the old mounds
You leave the city for the Kernavė mounds, Lithuania's ancient solstice ground, then drive east into the Aukštaitija lakes and a restored manor, where a lakeside sauna runs into the white night.

After breakfast your chauffeur drives you west to the Kernavė hill-forts, the grassy mounds of Lithuania's first capital and a gathering place for the solstice since pagan times, where Rasos, the Lithuanian midsummer, has been marked for centuries. Your guide walks you over the mounds in the high summer light. From there the road turns east into the Aukštaitija lake country, a region of forest, still water and old wooden villages, ending at Paliesius Manor on its own lake near Ignalina. The evening is unhurried: a lakeside sauna, a swim in the dark water, and the long dusk that, this far north, never quite becomes night. Dinner is from the manor kitchen.

Into Latvia, weaving for the eve
You cross into Latvia to a manor at the edge of the Gauja valley. A gathering walk for flowers and herbs, a wreath-weaving workshop, and the caraway Jāņu cheese made by hand, all in preparation for tomorrow's Līgo night.

After a slow manor breakfast your chauffeur drives you north, crossing into Latvia and on to the Gauja valley, the wooded river gorge at the heart of the country's oldest national park. You settle in at Kārļamuiža, a restored manor at the park's edge, where the day is given to preparation for the night to come. With a local host you walk the meadows and woods to gather the flowers, oak and herbs that Jāņi asks for, then sit to weave them: flower crowns for the women, oak-leaf wreaths for the men, each with its own meaning. In the kitchen you help make Jāņu siers, the caraway cheese pressed for the festival, and hear how a Latvian midsummer runs. The evening is quiet, the last still one before the eve.

Jāņi: the bonfire until sunrise
The shortest night. Flower and oak wreaths worn, a village Jāņi celebration with Līgo call-and-response songs, cheese and beer, the bonfire lit at dusk and kept burning, and the vigil for the 4:30 sunrise.

The whole day leans toward the night. You wear the wreaths you wove, flowers for the women, oak leaves for the men, and join a village Jāņi celebration on the manor grounds, the oldest and most loved festival in the Latvian year. The Līgo songs begin, the two-part call-and-response that is sung only around the solstice, the refrain returning again and again. There is Jāņu siers and caraway, rye bread and beer, and the men named Jānis honoured as the night's own. At dusk the bonfire is lit, set high so it can be seen across the valley, and it is kept burning until dawn, since to let it die is bad luck. Couples jump the flames together, and the bold go into the woods to look for the fern flower, which the old story says blooms only at midnight on this one night. The sky never fully darkens, and near half past four the sun returns. You have stayed up for the shortest night of the year.

Midsummer day, slow
A late, quiet morning after the vigil. A Gauja lake swim, the red castle at Turaida, and a restorative pirts sauna, then an evening transfer to Riga.

Jāņi day is for recovering slowly, and nothing is scheduled early. You wake late to a long manor breakfast, then let the Gauja valley restore you at its own pace: a swim in the river or a still lake, the red brick keep at Turaida above its gardens, and, when you are ready, a master-led pirts, the Latvian sauna ritual with birch whisks and herb heat that is the traditional close to the festival. In the evening your chauffeur drives you the short way to Riga, the Latvian capital in its full summer light, where you check in near the Old Town. A last dinner, still in the long dusk, is your own.
