Plan two days for Vilnius, the baroque capital and its UNESCO old town. Add one to two more, three to four in total, for the Trakai island castle and the second city of Kaunas. Allow five to seven days to reach the Curonian Spit at Nida, the Hill of Crosses, and the lake country of Aukštaitija in the north-east.
The short version
Two days is Vilnius, the largest baroque old town in the region. Three to four days adds Trakai and Kaunas within easy reach. Five to seven days lets you reach the coast and the lakes, the widest version of the country.
Two days: Vilnius
Vilnius has the largest baroque old town in Northern Europe, the artists' republic of Užupis across the river, and a hot-air balloon that lifts over the rooftops at first light, one of the few capitals in the world to allow it. Two days covers the churches, the courtyards and an amber atelier without hurry.
For a first visit, two full days in the capital is the right base before you travel out.
Three to four days: Trakai and Kaunas
Add the Trakai island castle on Lake Galvė, half an hour from the city and best reached by boat, with a Karaim lunch by the water. Kaunas, the interwar capital, brings modernist architecture and a very different mood, an easy day by road.
Four days gives you the capital plus its two most rewarding neighbours, still at a gentle pace.
Five to seven days: the dunes and the lakes
With five to seven days you reach the Curonian Spit, the UNESCO sand peninsula where the Parnidis dune meets the lagoon at Nida, and the Hill of Crosses, over two hundred thousand crosses on a single mound. The lake country of Aukštaitija in the north-east adds forest, water and a floating sauna.
A week is the full arc of Lithuania, from the gilded capital to the golden sand of the spit, without a rushed morning in it.
How Lithuania fits a wider Baltic trip
Lithuania is the southern end of the Baltic circuit, closest to Poland. Two to three days here open a seven to eleven day trip north through Latvia and Estonia. The drive to Riga passes the Hill of Crosses, so the border crossing doubles as sightseeing.
- Is 2 days enough for Lithuania?
- Two days is enough for Vilnius, its baroque old town and Užupis at a relaxed pace. To add Trakai, Kaunas or the coast, allow three to seven days.
- How many days do you need in Vilnius?
- Two full days sees Vilnius comfortably, including the old town, Užupis and an amber atelier. Add a half-day for the Trakai island castle nearby.
- Is the Curonian Spit worth the extra days?
- If you have five days or more, yes. Nida and the Parnidis dune are among the most memorable landscapes in the Baltics, and worth the drive west from Vilnius.
- Can you combine Lithuania with Latvia and Estonia?
- Yes. Lithuania is the usual starting point of a three-capital trip: seven days for all three, ten to add the Curonian Spit, the coast and the countryside.
