Vilnius → Warsaw
There is no fast train between Vilnius and Warsaw. The rail route needs a change and takes most of a day, and the coach is long. A private car covers it door to door in about seven hours, on your schedule, with the luggage in the boot rather than under a bus.
The road runs southwest through the Suwalki region and Augustow, past lakes and pine forest, then down to Warsaw. Both countries are in Schengen, so nobody stops at the border. We can break the drive at Augustow or the Wigry monastery if you want the day to be a journey rather than a transfer.

- A white baroque monastery on a peninsula in a lake, north of Augustow. A twenty minute stop that transforms the drive.

- A lakeside town in the Polish forest, and the natural halfway lunch. Canals, water and quiet.

Comfort for the distance.
Sedan for up to three with cases, van for up to eight. On a seven hour drive the van is worth it for four or more, and both take full-size luggage without argument.
- Is there a direct train from Vilnius to Warsaw?
- Not a fast one. The rail route requires a change and takes most of a day. Rail Baltica, the new standard-gauge line, is under construction with services targeted for the end of the decade, and will change this considerably.
- How long is the drive from Vilnius to Warsaw?
- About seven hours door to door for roughly 470 kilometres, using the Via Baltica corridor through Suwalki and Augustow. Add an hour if you stop for lunch and the Wigry monastery.
- Are there border checks between Lithuania and Poland?
- No. Both are in the Schengen area, so the crossing is a sign at the roadside and nothing more. This is the stretch known as the Suwalki gap, which is strategically discussed and, on the ground, farmland and motorway.
- Can we stop along the way?
- Yes, and it is the main reason to drive rather than fly. Wigry monastery and the lakes around Augustow are both close to the route, and we build the time into the plan.
- Would flying be quicker?
- In the air, yes, but with airport transfers, check-in and security at both ends the door-to-door gap narrows considerably, and you see nothing. For three or more travelers the car is also often the cheaper option.
