Trakai sits half an hour from Vilnius, on a peninsula between three lakes. The private car collects you from your hotel in the morning, and you are walking the wooden footbridge to the island castle before the first coach groups arrive.
The Karaim community, Turkic-speaking and Karaite by faith, settled here in the 14th century as the Grand Duke's personal guard. Their kenesa and low wooden houses still line the single main street, where the kibinai pastry, savoury or sweet, is made to the same recipe it always was.

Getting there
Trakai is easy to reach on your own. Buses leave Vilnius bus station through the day and take about 40 minutes; the LTG Link train is a little quicker, around 35 minutes, but runs less often. From either station it is a walk of roughly half an hour to the castle footbridge. Public transport makes a perfectly sensible day here. The private car saves the walk and the timetable, and brings you back to your hotel door.
The best time to go
Late spring and early autumn give the best balance: long days, mild weather and room on the footbridge. July and August weekends bring the largest crowds and the most boats on Lake Galvė. In winter the lake often freezes and the castle looks at its most austere, but from December to February the castle museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so the day is planned around that.

- About 28 kilometres, a half-hour drive by private car. Most of our guests are back in Vilnius by mid-afternoon.
- Is the castle interior included?
- Yes. Entrance to the island castle museum is included, along with the Karaim heritage walk and a kibinai lunch.
- Can this be combined with another stop?
- Yes, a short detour to the Aukštadvaris viewpoint or an extra hour on the lake can be added when you book, at no change to the driver's day rate.
