The story in one paragraph

Riga Art Nouveau, at the pace of a long read.

Between 1899 and 1914, Riga added more than 750 jugendstil buildings to the inner city — almost a third of its total stock. Most travellers see Alberta iela in twenty minutes. Four days lets you read the rest.

Three nights in a converted 1903 Eisenstein apartment building. A working architectural historian leads three of the days. Three private interior visits in buildings the public never sees, plus the Art Nouveau Museum and an ornament workshop.

Why this trip.

Four things that set it apart
01

Riga has more Art Nouveau than anywhere else

More than 750 jugendstil buildings in the inner city — almost a third of the total stock, and the densest concentration of the style in the world.

02

Three private apartment-block interiors

The best Riga Art Nouveau is residential. We have three families willing to open their flats — original brass, terrazzo, parquet, painted ceilings.

03

Stay inside an Eisenstein building

The hotel is a converted 1903 Mihail Eisenstein apartment block — the architect of the most ornate facades on Alberta iela. Original stair, restored.

04

An ornament-plaster workshop

Half a day with Sigita, a working restorer who has rebuilt many of the city's best mascarons. You leave with a small plaster cast you made yourself.

Day by day.

4-day itinerary · approx. 40 km
