The Northern Crown

This morning you leave Vilnius with your guide and driver for the lakes of Trakai, the old grand-ducal seat just west of the city. You reach the red-brick island castle by boat across the still water, then explore the restored keep and its halls before sitting down to a Karaim lunch, the cooking of a small Turkic community the dukes settled here six centuries ago, famous for its kibinai pastries. In the afternoon the road turns to Kernavė, where a line of grass-covered hill-forts rises above the Neris valley, the earliest medieval capital of Lithuania and now a UNESCO site. After a morning at Mežotne you are driven the short distance into Riga, the largest of the Baltic capitals and a city built on Hanseatic trade. At dawn you set out on boardwalks across an open bog, the low light catching pools and stunted pines in a landscape that feels far older than any city you have seen. After the walk you sit down to a manor lunch on one of the park's restored estates. Today you cross Estonia from the northern park to its western coast, where the mainland gives way to a scatter of low islands. Your driver brings you to the ferry, and you sail across the sound to Muhu, a quiet island of juniper heath, stone walls and thatched farms. From the harbour it is a short drive to Pädaste Manor, a restored medieval house set on its own peninsula and widely held to be the finest country retreat in the Baltics. The afternoon is yours to walk the reed-fringed shoreline, use the sea spa or simply slow down after the long arc of capitals. This morning you ferry back from Muhu to the mainland and drive to Tallinn, where the journey leaves the Baltic states and crosses the Gulf of Finland by sea to Helsinki, a passage of roughly two hours with the old town shrinking astern and the Finnish capital rising ahead.
