Tallinn shore excursions, ahead of the coach parties.

Four ships a day in July put several thousand people through one medieval gate. We start earlier, walk the other way round, and have you on Toompea while the coaches are still queueing at the terminal.

Where you dock
Old City Harbour, quays A to D, about 1.2 km from the Viru Gate. Larger ships sometimes use the Saaremaa quay, a little further out.
Typical time ashore
Most calls are eight to eleven hours, and Tallinn takes overnight calls in summer, which is when the Old Town is at its best.

Tallinn

Tallinn is the busiest cruise port in the eastern Baltic and its Old Town is small, which is a bad combination between eleven and two. The terminal is about 1.2 km from the walls, a twenty-minute walk or a five-minute drive, and everyone does that walk at the same time.

The whole craft here is sequencing. We take you up to Toompea first while the crowd is still working through the Lower Town, come down the short leg of Lühike jalg rather than up it, and reach Town Hall Square when it is emptying rather than filling. If you have seen Tallinn before, the better answer is to leave it entirely: Lahemaa National Park is an hour east and almost nobody off a ship goes there.

What we run here

Excursions from this port.

Medieval Tallinn, walked in reverse
Toompea first, while everyone else is below: the cathedral hill, the Patkuli and Kohtuotsa viewpoints, then down into the Lower Town for Town Hall Square, the Great Guild and the Holy Spirit clock as the square empties.
Duration: 3 to 4 hours · From $94 (≈ €80) per person at two travellers, walking, no vehicle needed
Lahemaa National Park
An hour east into bog, forest and coast: the Viru bog boardwalk, the manor at Palmse, and the fishing village of Altja with its net sheds. Almost nobody off a ship comes here, and it is the best day this port offers.
Duration: 6 to 7 hours · From $181 (≈ €155) per person at two travellers, including entries
Kadriorg, Kalamaja and the Seaplane Harbour
The city beyond the walls: Peter the Great's baroque palace and park, the wooden houses of Kalamaja, and the Seaplane Harbour, three vast concrete domes built in 1916-1917, now holding a submarine, with an icebreaker moored outside.
Duration: 4 hours · From $123 (≈ €105) per person at two travellers, including museum entry
Old Town, lunch and marzipan
The reverse walk above, then lunch in the Old Town, and an hour at Maiasmokk on Pikk, a historic café with a marzipan room.
Duration: 5 hours · From $164 (≈ €140) per person at two travellers, including lunch
Included in every booking

What you get.

  • A guide holding a name board at the terminal exit
  • Private vehicle for your party only, or walking where a car adds nothing
  • All entrance fees named in your itinerary, booked in advance
  • Your ship's actual arrival time monitored, not the scheduled one
  • A written back-on-board plan with a 90-minute buffer
  • Bottled water, and a wheelchair-accessible vehicle on request
The one promise

You get back to the ship.

Booking independently means your ship is not obliged to wait for you, and no operator can honestly promise otherwise. What we can do is build every itinerary backwards from your all-aboard time with a 90-minute buffer, track your ship's actual arrival rather than the schedule, and drop a stop rather than run late. That is the whole discipline, and it is why these pages lead on timings instead of photographs.

Questions we get asked
Is the Old Town walk hard going?
It is cobbled throughout and Toompea is a genuine hill, with the two approaches being a long ramp or a stepped lane. We can drive you up and walk you down, which removes the climb entirely. Say so when you book rather than on the day.
Can we do Helsinki from Tallinn on a port day?
No, and we will not sell it. The fast ferry is two hours each way and any delay puts your ship's departure at risk. If Helsinki matters to you, it is worth its own call.
How early can you start?
As early as your gangway opens, and we recommend it. An 08:00 start in the Old Town is a different city from a 10:30 one: the square is empty, the light is better, and the first coaches have not landed.
Is Lahemaa realistic on an eight-hour call?
Yes. An hour out, four hours in the park, an hour back, and you are at the gangway with well over an hour in hand. It is the excursion we recommend most often to people who have done Tallinn before.
What if our ship is on the far quay?
We check the berth the evening before and again on the morning, and we meet you wherever you actually are. The Saaremaa quay adds about ten minutes and nothing to the price.
