The story in one paragraph

Medieval Tallinn in Depth, at the pace of a long read.

Tallinn is the best-preserved medieval capital in northern Europe — and most visitors miss its second story.

Three days inside the walls with a guide who is also a working historian. We climb towers usually closed to the public, sit at a guild bench, and learn why the marzipan really matters.

Why this trip.

Four things that set it apart
01

A historian, not a tour guide

Your guide for all three days is a working academic who teaches Hanseatic history at Tartu University. The walks are unhurried, the digressions are why you came.

02

Towers usually closed to the public

We hold permits for two wall-towers and one inner-bailey gallery that aren't on the public route. The keys are real and the climbs are slow.

03

A working guildhall dinner

Dinner on Day 2 is a private seating in the Great Guild's banquet room — a 14th-century space, a five-course Estonian tasting menu, and the hall to ourselves.

04

Inside the Maiasmokk kitchen

Tallinn has been making marzipan since 1806 and the secret is in the kitchen behind the café. We open the door and watch the master at work.

Day by day.

3-day itinerary · approx. 0 km

Each day is built around one or two anchor experiences with deliberate slack for free time. Departure timings adjust slightly with daylight and weather.

01Fri
Tallinn — Lower Town

Hanseatic merchants & Town Hall Square

Arrival, check-in, and an unhurried afternoon walk through the Lower Town. Raekoja plats (Town Hall Square), the Holy Spirit Church with its painted clock, and the merchant houses on Pikk and Lai. Welcome dinner in a 13th-century cellar tavern.

We start at the foot of Raekoja plats with the original 1404 Town Hall — the only surviving Gothic town hall in northern Europe — and trace the merchants' route from the Great Guild down to the harbour. Your guide knows the painted shutters by name. The walk closes on Pikk Street, where the Three Sisters merchant houses still have their original goods-hoists in the gables.

Toompea & the wall

Upper Town and the towers

Climb to Toompea, the cathedral hill. Walk a section of the medieval wall closed to general visitors, with after-hours access to two towers and the Kiek-in-de-Kök gallery. Sunset from Patkuli viewpoint, then a private guildhall dinner in the Great Guild's banquet room.

Toompea is a different city from the Lower Town — the seat of bishops and barons, with stone houses behind iron gates and a cathedral that has been remade four times. Our wall-walk is roughly 600 metres along the inner rampart with three tower climbs, all by lamp after the public has gone. The guildhall dinner is held in the room where the Brotherhood of the Blackheads voted on trade tariffs in 1399.

Kalamaja & Telliskivi → Departure

Out the wall, into the wood

A morning beyond the walls in Kalamaja's wooden-house quarter and the Telliskivi creative district. Maiasmokk marzipan workshop with the master before you go. Departures from noon — most guests fly out of TLL or extend with a Lahemaa NP day trip.

Kalamaja is where the working town lived: railway workers, fishermen, dockyard families. The wooden houses date from the 1880s onward and are painted in oxblood and ochre. Telliskivi, an old industrial yard nearby, is now Tallinn's creative district. We finish at Maiasmokk on Pikk for the marzipan kitchen — the master is Anneli, who has been here since 1986 and shows no sign of stopping.
