Soomaa means 'land of bogs', and this trip only runs in winter, before the spring flood the locals call the fifth season turns the forest into a temporary lake. Snowshoes go on within an hour of leaving Pärnu.
Three hours of walking cross black-water pools crusted with ice and stands of frozen pine, with a local guide who knows the safe line across the bog. A wooden hut breaks the walk for hot tea; a sauna stop is optional on the way back.

Getting there
Soomaa is about 45 kilometres from Pärnu, and public transport barely reaches it: a bus runs to Riisa village inside the park a couple of times a day, taking about an hour, and the times do not fit a winter day on the bog. The snowshoe routes also need a local guide who knows the safe line. The private car brings you to the trailhead in about an hour and back to Pärnu before dark.
The best time to go
This trip runs only in winter, typically December to March, when there is snow and the bog surface is frozen. January and February usually give the most reliable cover. In late March or early April the snowmelt brings the flood known as the fifth season, the forest turns to open water and snowshoes give way to canoes. December days are short, with about six and a half hours of light.
