Your chauffeur meets you at Tallinn airport (TLL) and drives you through the cobbled streets to the Hotel Telegraaf inside the medieval walls. After you settle in, your guide-historian joins you for a private walk through the parts of the Old Town that sit behind the velvet rope: a climb inside a defensive wall tower, then a seat on a merchant guild bench, with the stories of the Hanseatic League told where they actually happened. The rooftops and spires spread out over the best-preserved medieval capital in northern Europe before the day gives way to a Michelin welcome dinner. The night afterward is your own.

The digital state

After breakfast, your guide-historian walks you through the modern story of Estonia: a digital-state briefing, the Telliskivi design quarter in a former rail yard, then the KGB museum atop the Viru hotel. The evening is free.

After breakfast inside the walls, your guide-historian opens the modern chapter of Estonia's story with an e-Estonia briefing on how one of the world's most advanced digital societies handles voting, banking and identity online. From there you walk together to the Telliskivi creative quarter, a former rail yard now filled with studios, galleries and design shops, where you have time to browse at your own pace and stop for coffee. The afternoon turns to the recent past: the KGB museum on the top floor of the Viru hotel, the once-secret floor from which the Soviet security service watched its guests. You return to the Old Town in the early evening and the rest of the night is free to dine where you choose.

Bog walk & smoke sauna

You leave Tallinn before dawn, your chauffeur driving east into Lahemaa National Park for a bog-shoe walk across the Viru raised bog at first light. Breakfast at Vihula Manor follows, and at dusk your guide-historian leads the initiation into the UNESCO smoke-sauna ritual.

You leave Tallinn before dawn with your guide-historian and chauffeur, heading east into Lahemaa National Park along the northern coast. You reach the Viru raised bog as the first light lifts: strapped onto wide bog-shoes that spread your weight over the soft ground, you walk the bog while the mist still sits on the pools and the cranes call. After the walk your chauffeur carries you on to Vihula Manor, a restored 16th-century estate inside the park, where breakfast is waiting and the afternoon is yours to wander the grounds and the watermill spa. At dusk your guide-historian leads the initiation into the Estonian smoke sauna, a ritual on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage list, in a blackened log bathhouse on the estate. A manor dinner closes the evening.

Ferry to Pädaste

After breakfast at Vihula, your chauffeur drives you west across Estonia to the ferry harbour, and the crossing carries you over to Muhu island. The day ends at Pädaste Manor with a farm-to-sea dinner from the estate's own gardens and waters.

After breakfast at Vihula Manor you leave with your guide-historian and chauffeur, driving west as the landscape opens toward the flat island shore of the Väinameri. At the harbour you board the ferry to Muhu, with the low islands passing on either side of the crossing. On the island your chauffeur takes you to Pädaste Manor, a Relais & Châteaux house on its own peninsula and the finest country retreat in the Baltics. You check in and the afternoon is yours: the sea spa, the manor grounds and the water are all a few minutes' walk. The evening brings the farm-to-sea dinner, drawn from the estate's kitchen gardens and the waters off its own dock.

Crater & castle

After breakfast, your chauffeur takes you across the causeway to Saaremaa for the Kaali meteorite crater and the moated bishop's castle at Kuressaare. The afternoon eases into a Saaremaa spa before the drive back to Pädaste for a second night.

After breakfast at the manor your chauffeur drives you across the short causeway from Muhu onto Saaremaa, the largest of Estonia's islands. Your first stop with your guide-historian is the Kaali meteorite crater, a near-perfect water-filled bowl punched into the land thousands of years ago and long wrapped in local legend. From there you continue south to Kuressaare and its moated bishop's castle, the best-preserved medieval fortress in the region, where you have time to walk the ramparts and look around at your own pace. The afternoon eases into a Saaremaa spa, a tradition the island is known for, before your chauffeur drives you back across the causeway to Pädaste Manor for a second night on Muhu.

Your last morning begins at Pädaste Manor with no particular rush. Take breakfast at your own pace, then a final wander through the grounds or a last turn in the sea spa before you pack. When you are ready, your chauffeur drives you to the harbour for the ferry back to the mainland, with a last look at the islands from the water. From there it is a steady drive across the country to Tallinn, where your chauffeur drops you at the airport (TLL) in good time for your afternoon flight. Your guide-historian sees you off, closing a journey that ran from the medieval wall to the western islands.

More about Estonia.

Before you ask

Common questions.

How demanding is the bog walk?
Gentle but unusual. Wide bog-shoes spread your weight over the soft ground; the pace is slow and flat, about 4 km in total with a guide who sets the rhythm.
Is Pädaste really the best on the islands?
Yes. It is the only Relais & Châteaux house in the Baltics and the reason many guests come. We hold two nights there so you are never rushed off the island.
Can children join?
Comfortable from age 8. We swap the e-Estonia briefing for a hands-on coding session at Proto and add a seal-watching boat off Saaremaa.
Best time of year?
June for long light and the bog at its greenest, September for quiet islands and warm sea spas. The ferries run more often in the summer timetable.
