The story in one paragraph

Estonia's Western Islands, at the pace of a long read.

Saaremaa runs one season behind the mainland, Hiiumaa one behind that. The pace is the point.

Cross from the mainland to Saaremaa and on to quieter Hiiumaa, two islands where the air smells different and the roads empty out. Sleep in a windmill, a heritage manor, and a lighthouse keeper's cottage, with a meteor crater field, an intact Bishop's Castle, and Kõpu Lighthouse along the way.

Why this trip.

Four things that set it apart
01

Two islands, two seasons behind

Saaremaa moves at one season behind the mainland; Hiiumaa, one season behind that. The pace is the point.

02

Sleep in a windmill, a manor, a lighthouse

Each night is a different character property: a working windmill on Saaremaa, a 19th-century estate in the interior, a lighthouse keeper's cottage on Hiiumaa.

03

A meteor crater field

Kaali fell from the sky around 1500 BCE. Nine craters remain, the largest 110 m across, full of dark groundwater. The folklore around them is older than the impact itself.

04

Kõpu Lighthouse, since 1531

One of the world's oldest lighthouses still in continuous use. We climb it slowly, with a keeper who has been on Hiiumaa since 1989.

Day by day.

5-day itinerary · approx. 750 km

Each day is built around one or two anchor experiences with deliberate slack for free time. Departure timings adjust slightly with daylight and weather.

Tallinn → Virtsu → Saaremaa

Off the mainland

Drive west from Tallinn to Virtsu (160 km). Twenty-five-minute ferry to Kuivastu on Muhu island, then the causeway to Saaremaa. Arrive Kuressaare for the night, with a slow walk around the harbour before dinner.

The drive to Virtsu is unhurried — pine forest, juniper meadows, occasional storks on chimney pots. The ferry is part of the day's pace; you can stand on the deck the whole way and watch the eider ducks. By the time we land on Muhu the air smells different. Kuressaare's old harbour is about ten minutes from your windmill; we walk it before dinner so the light works in our favour.

Bishop's Castle & Kaali crater

Morning at Kuressaare's intact 14th-century Bishop's Castle, the only intact medieval fortress in the Baltics. Drive inland to the Kaali meteor crater field for a slow lunch on the rim. Afternoon at Sõrve peninsula's lighthouse and dunes.

The castle is a serious building — convertible drawbridges, a fully preserved chapel, and a moat that still holds water. The Kaali craters are uncanny: nine impact pits in a small farmland, the largest a near-perfect circle of dark groundwater that the Vikings called the eye of the sun. Sõrve is a long thin peninsula running south; the lighthouse is one of the most photographed buildings in Estonia and yet rarely crowded.

Saaremaa → Hiiumaa

Hiiumaa, the quieter island

Drive north across Saaremaa to Triigi for the morning ferry to Sõru on Hiiumaa. Slow afternoon along the coast road to Kõpu Lighthouse — one of the world's oldest still in continuous use. Settle into the lighthouse keeper's cottage for the night.

Hiiumaa is half the population density of Saaremaa and a quarter that of the mainland. The forests are thicker, the villages quieter, the roads emptier. Kõpu has been guiding ships since 1531; the current tower is the third on the same foundations. Our keeper, Mati, is a third-generation Hiiumaan whose grandfather kept the light through the war. The cottage is two-bedroom with a small kitchen and a stove.

Coastal walks & a wooden church

A whole day on island time. Walk the long beach at Tahkuna in the morning. Pühalepa wooden church and the Estonia ferry memorial in the afternoon. Smoked-fish dinner at a working harbour smokehouse on the north coast.

Tahkuna is a long pale-sand beach with a memorial to the Estonia ferry tragedy of 1994 — a quiet bell that rings at 01:48, the moment the ship sank. The beach itself is 3 km of empty white sand. Pühalepa church is one of the oldest wooden churches in Estonia and surprisingly small inside. The smokehouse dinner is genuinely the working harbour's cookhouse — perch, eel, and zander straight from the morning catch.
