Is three days enough for Riga?

Three days is enough to read the architecture and breathe the city; it isn't enough to do every museum. We design this as a long weekend; if you want depth, we extend to five days with Sigulda and the Gauja Valley.

What if it rains on the Jūrmala day?

Bring a light rain jacket and a book. The boardwalk is fine in light rain and the sanatorium restaurants are designed for weather. If a thunderstorm hits, we substitute the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum on the way back.

Is Jūrmala worth visiting outside summer?

Yes — September is gorgeous (warm sand, empty beach), May has the cleanest air. October and November we usually substitute Sigulda or the Cēsis castle ruins. Winter Jūrmala is a different proposition entirely.

How fit do I need to be?

Easy. Expect 3–5 km of walking on most days, all on flat surfaces. The Mežaparks afternoon is shaded and gentle.

We don't charge punitive supplements. The single-room cost is €160 for the trip — the actual hotel difference, no markup.

Riga has the densest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings in the world. Mikhail Eisenstein's Alberta iela facades are the headline; the side streets are the answer.

A Belle-Époque train to the sea

Jūrmala is twenty-five minutes by suburban rail. We take the same line that brought Catherine the Great to her summer dacha — wooden seats, windows that open, a lazy curve through the pines.

An architect-led morning walk

Day 3's walk is led by Inga, a working architect who has researched the Eisenstein corpus for fifteen years. She knows which mask is a self-portrait and which is the contractor's wife.

A Latvian tasting dinner

One slow dinner at a chef-led restaurant doing modern Latvian: smoked sprat butter, hemp-oil potatoes, sea-buckthorn sorbet. Five courses, paired or not.

Riga — Old Town

Hanseatic Riga

Arrival, check-in at a boutique Art Nouveau hotel on Raiņa bulvāris. Afternoon walking tour of the medieval core: the House of Blackheads, the Three Brothers, and the Dome Cathedral with a short organ recital. Welcome dinner at a Old Town wine bar.

Riga's old town is compact — you can cross it in fifteen minutes — but the layers are deep. The House of Blackheads was rebuilt in 1999 from rubble, on the original 14th-century footprint, and the result is uncanny. The Dome Cathedral has the fourth-largest organ in Europe; if our timing is right, we sit through a midweek recital before dinner.

Pine forest & wooden villas

Suburban train from Riga Central to Majori, the heart of Jūrmala. Walk Jomas iela — the pedestrianised promenade. Long lunch at a beachfront restaurant in a converted 1890s sanatorium. Afternoon at leisure on the wide white-sand beach. Evening train back to Riga.

Jūrmala is a 30 km string of villages along the Gulf of Riga that has been the imperial summer capital since 1814. The wooden villas are an entire architectural tradition unto themselves — fretwork verandas, painted shutters, a vocabulary of curved porch posts. The sand is fine and white, the water is warm by August, and the pines run right down to the dunes. Bring a book.

Alberta iela & Mežaparks

Architect-led morning on Alberta iela — the Eisenstein masks, the screaming gargoyles, the Egyptian heads. A coffee in the Art Nouveau Museum on Strēlnieku iela. Afternoon in Mežaparks, the garden suburb of 1903. Departures from late afternoon, or extend with a free evening.

Inga has been on Alberta iela in every weather and every light. She'll show you the buildings the guidebooks miss — the National Romantic façades on Brīvības iela by Eižens Laube, the perpendicular Jugendstil on Tērbatas, and Mežaparks (Forest Park) where Latvian middle-class summer dachas grew into full-time houses. The garden suburb is a quieter cousin of Hampstead Garden Suburb in London, with a much shorter pedigree.
