Why this trip.

Four things that set it apart
01

A UNESCO smoke-sauna ceremony

The smoke sauna of Võrumaa was inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 — heated for half a day with no chimney, used for healing as much as washing. Eda and Aare have hosted travellers since 2011; the ceremony is sober, careful, and the most quietly Estonian thing you can do.

02

The Setomaa kingdom

The Seto are a small Finnic people in Estonia's southeast corner with their own polyphonic singing tradition (UNESCO 2009), their own kingdom-day ceremony, and a half-Estonian, half-Russian cultural border that runs through their villages.

03

Russian Old Believers on Lake Peipus

Twelve villages of 17th-century Orthodox schismatics live along the Estonian shore of Lake Peipus, growing onions in long red barns. A long onion-barn lunch with the Maltsev family.

04

Tartu — university town

Estonia's intellectual capital, with the Estonian National Museum built into a former Soviet airfield. We use it as the southern starting point.

Day by day.
